Sound Beginnings Team Members
Joy MacTavish, MA, IBCLC, RLC

Joy is the owner of Sound Beginnings. Her professional work with families began over a decade ago as birth and postpartum doula and then childbirth educator. She brings her compassion and active listening to her roles supporting families as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), Certified Babywearing Consultant for all things related to carrying or wearing your little one, Certified Go Diaper Free Consultant/Coach for elimination communication and potty training, and Sleep Savvy method certified infant sleep consultant. When not working with new families, Joy can be found learning and exploring with her son, reading, and traveling to visit family in Bellingham and Eastern Washington. For more about Joy, please check out this Sound Beginnings blog post.
Melissa Coffey, RN, IBCLC
Melissa credits mother-to-mother support from friends and certified volunteer leaders for her enjoyable breastfeeding experiences. Melissa later became certified and served as a volunteer leader for two years in a busy metropolitan group. She then became a Registered Nurse and an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and has worked for many years in a leading Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative certified hospital. She enjoys encouraging and supporting families as they experience the amazing—and often challenging—transition to parenting newborns.
Adeline Hill, CBS

Adeline is Sound Beginnings' lactation intern and an IBCLC-to-be! She is thrilled to join such a dynamic practice, and to have the opportunity to learn under such skilled providers. Adeline escaped the dry heat of Southern Arizona for the cool green of the Pacific Northwest five years ago, and is still loving every cloudy, drizzly day. A birth, postpartum, and pregnancy release doula, Adeline has attended over 70 births and worked with over 100 postpartum families. She attained her breastfeeding specialist certification in 2016 after the birth of her daughter, who is still nursing up a storm as a feisty toddler! A queer woman herself, Adeline is passionate about supporting all families in our Puget Sound community. She loves yoga, cooking, reading, babywearing, reproductive justice, coffee, and encouraging Joy to occasionally take a day off.
Dolly Smith, MS, RN, IBCLC

Dolly has a Master in Maternal Child Nursing. While she lived in Hawaii, Dolly took her first International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) exam in 1995, and re-tested in 2005 and 2015. After getting credentialed, Dolly grew to love helping families breastfeed and educating professionals to stay current. Now being an IBCLC is part of her fabric. It is a large part of who she is and how she makes a difference in the world. It allows her an avenue to connect with families and offer them not only research-based lactation support but also some kindness, encouragement and belief in their abilities to be parents...one of the toughest "jobs" around. Dolly currently works in the lactation department at Seattle Children's Hospital and co-directs the Breastfeeding Help Beyond the Hospital Stay Conference with Joy each year. Due to these commitments she does not regularly see private lactation clients, but she will always be a member of the Sound Beginnings team.
